iTunes App Store is home to over 1.5 million apps and Google Play hosts over 2 million, but the number of apps that actually get installed and used on consumers’ devices is still quite small. We already knew that people only interacted with a small handful of third-party apps on a regular basis, and now, according to a new study on mobile app usage, we learn that about one in four mobile users only uses an app once.

There are some important factors you have to keep in mind about installing too many apps. Here we are going to mention some of these factors and briefly explain them.

Full Storage problem

Almost all phones out today still store all of their apps on the physical hard drive of the device. This capacity is only so big and when you install too many apps you fill-up the hard drive. If the hard drive is full you will start to notice reduced performance. The slow performance of mobile devices is so annoying and it may be led to stop working properly. You will also notice that you can no longer download updates, update your phone, or take pictures because your device is full.

Lacking space is an important issue for users especially those who are attached a lot to their cellphones. Full storage will even stop your camera or apps running and you can no longer use your daily needed apps. Therefore, it is important to uninstall unnecessary apps in your devices to free some space.

Security issues

The more apps you install, the more vulnerabilities you are giving your phone. You may have noticed that when you are installing an app, either on iOS or Android devices, an alert will be shown to authenticate the app access to your data. Not all apps are clean and some of them include viruses and they may attack your devices. In order to secure your data, it is necessary to prevent installing untrusted apps and delete any unused apps on your phone. If you install apps that you don’t plan to use more than once, delete them afterward. It isn’t just a matter of chance, apps that haven’t been updated or aren’t running proper code will leave your device open to compromise. Installing fewer apps, and only the apps that you plan to use makes it less likely that you will have a security breach.

Updating Apps

Imagine you have many apps installed on your mobile device. Each app releases updates almost once a week or a month and you have to update it in order to use its latest features. Updating a large number of apps at one time can be time-consuming and expensive. You will start having update notifications pop up at the top of your screen and then it will start installing each one individually. The process of installing each app will slow down your phone significantly and eat up data. No one wants their phone to be slowed down for the time it would take to update a lot of apps. A huge amount of data is also needed to update apps. By the increase of resolution and screen size of mobile devices, apps sizes are increased noticeably. Therefore, too much data and storage are used during the updating process.

Background running apps

There are a lot of apps that run at least some processes in the background. The more apps that you download, the slower your phone is going to get. This is because there are only so many processes that a phone can handle, including both open and background apps.

Old phones have limited RAM that is responsible for running the apps. Too many apps running on the background will use all remaining RAM space on your phone and make your devices as slow as a turtle. On the other hand, new generation phones come with more than 4 GBs RAM. Having stronger RAM helps phones run background apps better. With only that much memory you are significantly impacting your ability to use your phone by downloading too many apps. Therefore, it is crucial to download the only necessary apps on your phone to prevent running too many apps in the background.

Too many Notifications

Although you can disable receiving notification for each application in your mobile settings, receiving too many notifications is frustrating and annoying. On the other hand, turning off notification for each individual app is time-consuming and you may prefer not to do that.

Avoid installing too many apps simply to control the number of notifications you get and make it easier to manage your applications and their settings.  If you throw in trying to manage too many installed apps you will start finding it very difficult to manage your phone or tablet. The more apps you install, the more screens you have to navigate to find apps that you want to use.
